American Idol 7 – Philadelphia Auditions

January 15, 2008

Yeah!  Joe Music is blogging the new season and could not be happier

With the writer’s strike sucking the life out of scripted TV, there’s more pressure than ever for AI to carry the advertising revenue for Fox and pull in the ratings.  Let’s see how it rolls.

Joey had a feel good story (lost 205lbs) and you gotta root for someone like that.  He sings Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning” and did a really good job, nice voice.  And going to Hollywood!  But you know the City of Brotherly Love is gonna hit some wrong notes.  Joe music chuckled at  the Bee Gees guy who wants to love a girl “…from the hair to the nipple…”  Okey dokey.

Paula was her old self, laying on compliments like she’s nursing a hungry baby.  Joe Music can’t wait for her first breakdown, hopeful that she ends up in the same ambulance as Britney.

James Lewis was encouraged by his co-workers to come down and audition.  They must really really hate him.  At first, Joe Music thought he’d lost his tongue and felt pity for him.  But it was too funny not to laugh.  And laugh hard.

And you have to feel for Temptress Brown, she was something else.  A high school middle linebacker (whaa?!), she has a mom she’s doing this for. Joe Music kinda feels bad sometimes that people come to these auditions with hope that it will change their life and that’s gotta be tough.  She sang “I’m Not Going Anywhere” by Jennifer Houston, and it was tough to listen to because from the first note you knew this wasn’t gonna happen.  Fortunately the judges were sympathetic.

There’s the guy who can make the sound of a cricket.  Don’t know why, but he does.

Alexis wins the “…and that’s why we have bodyguards.” award.  She was channeling Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar, Grace Slick and whoever she shared the bong with earlier in the day.  Surprisingly, her voice wasn’t that bad — it was 60s rock — but it wasn’t for American Idol.

Angela Martin had the life story that Joe Music (and AI) likes to see – single mother with a disabled child, trying to make a life for themselves.  She sang really well — Joe Music sees her in the Top 10.

Kristy Lee Cook is cut from the same Kelly Pickler/;lkj;wre cloth.

Just plain wrong.

Creepy and scary.

Sang “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” by Roger Daltrey.  It didn’t hurt, but it didn’t help either.

And premier night ended with  Brooke White who got the yellow ticket and is on the road to the Dark Side.

The tally? 29 folks are going to Hollywood.

Joe Music Out!
